Annabelle Yu

I am a middle schooler at Crocker Middle School in Hillsborough who loves math, science, music, and making things.

I like exploring ideas through STEM fair projects, math contests, music, and everyday curiosity. I also care about the environment, so I am especially interested in projects that can make a practical difference. This site is where I share some of the things I have been building, learning, and creating.

Featured Project

Flowless is one of the projects I am most excited about.

Flowless is my 2026 app project. It is an Android app I built to help people become more aware of their shower time and reduce water use through better habits.

I like that it brings together coding, science, and a practical idea that could help in everyday life.

Another Project

SafeEats focuses on food safety and allergy awareness.

SafeEats is my earlier 2025 mobile app idea. I designed it to help people figure out what is in their food before eating it, so they can better judge whether it might cause an allergic reaction.

It shows another side of how I like using technology to help with practical, everyday problems.

Earlier Project

My 2024 motion-sensor light switch brought hardware and code together.

Motion Sensor Powered Light Switch is a 2024 project I built using a PIR motion sensor, a Raspberry Pi program, and a circuit that turns lights off when no motion is detected in a room.

It reflects my interest in physical computing, automation, and practical energy-saving ideas.

Music

Music is a big part of my creative life too.

I sing, study voice, and also play guitar and piano. Music gives me a creative balance alongside math and science.

My music page includes featured performances, public photos, and the 2023 International Youth Music Competitions recognition for my performance of Misty.

Story

Math and science are a big part of who I am, and creativity is too.

Math

I like solving challenging problems

I participate in AMC, MathCounts, and Math Kangaroo because I enjoy patterns, problem solving, and the discipline of mathematical thinking.

Recognition

I was encouraged by early STEM recognition

Public STEM fair results list my project Motion Sensor Power Switch, which earned an honorable mention in engineering and applied science.

Music

Creativity stays important to me

Alongside math and science, I also sing, study voice, play guitar and piano, and share performances online. Music gives me a strong creative balance.

Community

I learn a lot through community

Choir, contests, and fairs have helped me grow not only on my own, but also in academic and creative communities with other people.

Beyond the Classroom

I try to stay active and balanced

As a competitive swimmer for Burlingame Aquatic Club, swimming adds another dimension to my life and helps balance academic curiosity and musical creativity with discipline and movement. My favorite stroke is backstroke.

Momentum

Some of the things I have been working on.

Math contest participation

I participate in AMC, MathCounts, and Math Kangaroo because I have a real interest in mathematical reasoning and competition.

Creative balance through music

Singing and studying music help balance the analytical side of my interests with creativity and expression.

Swimming as part of a balanced routine

Competitive swimming with Burlingame Aquatic Club gives me an active, disciplined outlet that complements my academic and artistic interests. My favorite stroke is backstroke.

2023 recognition

I earned First Prize with Honors in the August 2023 International Youth Music Competitions for my performance of Misty.

2024 motion-sensor light switch project and STEM fair recognition

I built a Motion Sensor Powered Light Switch using a PIR sensor, a Python program on Raspberry Pi, and a circuit that turns room lights off when no motion is detected in order to save energy. The 2024 San Mateo County STEM Fair results page lists me from Crocker Middle with Motion Sensor Power Switch, earning an Honorable Mention in Engineering, Technology and Application of Science.

2025 science fair project: SafeEats

My 2025 project, SafeEats, is a mobile app idea that helps users check food contents in advance to better understand whether they might have an allergic reaction.

2026 science fair project: Flowless

My 2026 project, Flowless, is an Android app designed to help people reduce water usage by tracking how long they spend in the shower.

Always exploring something new

Across science, math, and music, I keep finding new things to learn, try, and build.

Creative Direction

Math, science, and creativity all matter to me because together they help me explore different paths with confidence.
